Your best friend in the home….Vinegar

I will never forget how this simple kitchen staple saved me while living in the balmy climate of Southern China. During the middle of a particularly warm and HUMID summer I happily left my apartment in Shenzhen for a two week vacation. Upon returning I was horrified to see that my entire apartment and all of my possessions inside were covered in a delicate blanket of green mold. Being from Kansas I hadn’t realized that the subtropical area in which I was living meant that I should have kept the A/C running to keep fresh, dry air circulating throughout the apartment. At first, I’ll admit that I panicked (a lot)! However, I soon calmed down and Googled. What I found was that vinegar is a safe alternative to bleach. While it is effective at killing mold spores, it doesn’t discolor fabric. Instead of throwing everything in the dumpster, I set to work cleaning every surface with vinegar and washing every item of clothing and upholstery I owned in a diluted solution. Clogged shower head? Fill a plastic bag with vinegar and attach it to the head. Let the head soak in vinegar overnight then remove and rinse with water for a few seconds.
Remove film from glass shower doors by saturating a sponge with vinegar then wiping the door clean.
Keep your kitchen and bathroom drains from smelling...funky. Pour a cup of white vinegar down drains once a week. Let sit 30 minutes then rinse with cool water.
I hate looking out of dirty windows. To get a sparkling clean view, mix equal parts vinegar and water. Wipe onto dirty windows and squeegee clean.
Tough carpet stains? Mix 2 tablespoons of vinegar with ¼ cup of salt or baking soda. Rub into the stain and let sit. Vacuum the next day.
